Ibogaine is a psychoactive drug that induces hallucinogenic effects like those associated with use of LSD or psilocybin. Although some studies have focused on ibogaine as a potential treatment for addiction, ibogaine is still not authorized for use as a treatment drug in the United States and American Addiction Centers does not offer ibogaine for the treatment of substance use disorders.

While the drug can initiate some short-term side effects, including anxiety after experiencing hallucinations, it may also tote certain medicinal properties. Anecdotal evidence suggests that ibogaine, which is derived from a plant found in the African rainforest, may adjust brain chemistry to the point that a person who otherwise might experience intense withdrawal symptoms for one or two weeks does not go through withdrawal or suffer from cravings. However, scientists are still exploring the potential of this drug in the realm of addiction treatment and do not believe ibogaine completely ends addiction.

More research must be conducted to determine the true safety and potential of ibogaine for treating substance abuse issues. American Addiction Centers offers evidence-based care for addiction treatment in multiple locations across the U.S. Our admissions navigators are available 24/7 to discuss the appropriate treatment for you.
